Having expectations can be good and bad. It boils down to how you manage expectations. I’m very aware at how my expectations often lead to my own disappointments though. To remedy this, I always use a let down as a lesson into how to gauge expectations for myself and others.

Being realistic in your expectations will significantly affect your happiness. If you have an expectation to start a company selling shirts and make a lot of money, you can either look at it one of two ways; realistically or idealistically. Being realistic doesn’t necessarily mean that your idealistic aspirations aren’t achievable. To gain a realistic perspective on something, you need to take the time to learn and become knowledgable on the topic. You need to understand the industry, take notes from prominent companies that are in the same realm of your own, know what type of investment you need to make for a start up, get hands on experience in the field, have a passion for the field, etc. Knowing the difference of what will most likely happen as opposed to what you want to happen is a great way to have a healthy expectation on the situation.

Additionally, I’ve been learning a lot about myself in regards to my expectations in relationships. I have a high expectation of how a relationship should work. But over the years and relationships I’ve been in, I now understand that my expectations on how a relationship should work weren’t realistic. Putting pressure on someone to meet your own expectations has to be handled delicately. Person-to-person communication solves a lot of problems and in todays world, we could use more of it. I still have certain expectations in a relationship. Adversely, through my own experience have found the idea that I may have not met their expectations as well. So being able to go through these situations, I’ve been able to identify a lot of things that I have since corrected, making each relationship closer to the last I will ever have; the one to last the rest of my life.
